Tips To Help You Survive And Thrive With Orthopedic Rehab

After orthopedic surgery, you will generally need to attend some sort of rehabilitation program in order to regain full use of the affected joint. This may be a short inpatient program, or it may be a series of in-home visits from a physical therapist. In either case, there are a few tips you can follow in order to better thrive in orthopedic rehab.

Focus on the exercises.

When you're working with the physical therapist or other rehab specialists, make sure you are focusing on what you're doing. When you focus on the exercises, you are more likely to fully engage the muscles those exercises are supposed to work. You'll also learn the exercises so you can put them to use on your own later on, which can be a really useful thing to do once you're out of rehab, but still working on recovery.

Be honest when it hurts.

Rehab can be uncomfortable, and to some degree, you will need to push through that discomfort in order for the program to be effective. However, it is important to be honest with your physical therapists and the other professionals when something hurts more than usual. This can be a sign you're pushing things a little too far. Your rehab specialists rely on this feedback in order to determine how far to push you, too. Speak up if something hurts.

Dress for movement.

When it's time for a physical therapy session, make sure you are wearing clothing that you're able to move around in freely. You don't want your physical therapist to have to forgo asking you to do certain, beneficial movements because your clothing won't allow them. And you don't want to feel like your movement is restricted by your clothing, either. Wear what you might wear to the gym. Supportive shoes are also important, especially if you're recovering from surgery on a leg or lower body joint.

Set goals.

If your rehab specialist does not work with you to set specific goals in your first session, ask if you can do so. Your goal might be to walk across the room on your own within two weeks, or it might be to do 12 elbow curls back to back. In either case, having a goal to work towards will help you stay focused throughout rehab.

Orthopedic rehab can be as important as your orthopedic surgery itself. Follow the tips above, and the process should go even more smoothly.
