Sweet Slumber: Three Common Sleep Disorders

Sleep centers offer patients suffering from a sleep disorder the much-needed relief they are seeking. Here is a look into three common sleep disorders and their symptoms as well as typical methods of treatment. 

Sleep Apnea

Though anyone can suffer from sleep apnea, this condition is more common among overweight individuals. Soft tissues of the mouth and throat can create a blockage in the airway, leading to excessive snoring and even episodes in which the individual cannot take a full breath. Usually undetected by the sleeper, these constant interruptions in the sleep cycle can lead to feelings of extreme fatigue or lethargy during the day. Treatment options can include the use of a CPAP machine or a mouthpiece specially designed for sufferers of sleep apnea. Symptoms can include waking up too early, the inability to fall asleep easily and extreme tiredness during the day. Over time, the lack of sleep caused by insomnia can lead to severe health issues including weight gain, anxiety disorders, and even depression. Stress can often act as a precursor for bouts of insomnia, so the patient may be asked to assess whether there are current life events or situations that are causing distress. Treatments can include a combination of sleep medicine, encouragement to stick to a regular sleep schedule, and even therapy.

Restless Leg Syndrome

For those who suffer from restless leg syndrome, or RLS, the irresistible urge to move one's legs may inhibit a restful night's sleep. Discomfort such as pain in the legs and charley horses can be a result of RLS, leading patients to stay awake during the night and feel tired during the day. This particular condition is often caused by an iron deficiency, which can easily be remedied by providing supplements to the patient. While massage can also help ease the symptoms of RLS, the effects will only be temporary and will need to be done on a regular basis. Other methods of treatment can include encouraging a healthy exercise routine as well as practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation.
