Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish such as tuna, salmon, sardines, and mackerel. They are thought to help lower your risk for cardiovascular disease, however, they can also help treat your allergy symptoms.

If you do not enjoy the taste of fish, talk to your physician about taking omega-3 supplements to relieve your allergic reactions. Omega-3s have strong anti-inflammatory properties that can help shrink swollen nasal passages, which will help reduce congestion.

While these supplements may prove beneficial in the treatment of allergic reactions, they may be inappropriate for those who take blood-thinning medications such as prescription anticoagulants or aspirin. Omega-3 fatty acids can interfere with platelet aggregation, raising the risk of heavy bleeding. 

Ascorbic Acid

Ascorbic acid is also known as vitamin C. It is thought to boost immunity, enhance vascular function, promote healthy collagen production, and lower the risk for gum disease. In addition to these health benefits, ascorbic acid supplements also possess antihistamine properties. This means that they may help ease allergy-related runny nose, sneezing, and even allergic skin reactions such as itching and hives.

Ascorbic acid is typically well-tolerated by most people, however, talk to your doctor before taking large doses because in some people taking too much ascorbic acid can result in abdominal cramps, bloating, and diarrhea. Another benefit of taking ascorbic acid supplements instead of antihistamines to treat your allergies is that they do not cause drowsiness and will not impair your ability to drive.

If you prefer to get your ascorbic acid from food, consume oranges, grapefruit, strawberries, and green leafy vegetables such as spinach. People who suffer from acid reflux may experience heartburn when eating large amounts of citrus fruit, so for them, consuming green leafy vegetables may be a wiser choice.
