Four Ways You Can Manage Back Pain During Your Pregnancy

As your body changes to accommodate your growing baby, it is not uncommon to suffer from back pain. The body produces hormones that allow the pelvis to relax during delivery; unfortunately, these hormones also cause the ligaments in the spine to loosen. The loosening of these ligaments also contributes to back pain. 

However, just because back pain is common during pregnancy does not mean you have to deal with it until you deliver your baby. Check out some of the ways you can manage back pain during your pregnancy.

1. See a Chiropractor

If your spine is out of alignment, it can contribute to back pain. A licensed chiropractor can help get your spine adjusted and alleviate your back pain. When searching for a chiropractor, look for a doctor who is experienced in manipulating pregnant women.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy has other benefits, such as encouraging proper alignment of the pelvis. Proper pelvic alignment allows the baby to get into an optimal position for delivery, shortening the time of labor.

2. Wear a Support Belt

Weight gain is a normal part of a healthy pregnancy. The body may not be used to supporting the extra weight, causing a host of issues, such as back strain and poor posture. A support belt can help alleviate these issues.

Look for an adjustable support belt that grows with you during your pregnancy. A belt that sits underneath the belly is ideal for reducing the amount of stress on your back.

3. Watch Your Posture

When you use poor posture, this puts strain on your back and contributes to your pain. Throughout the day, take steps to improve your posture. During periods where you are sitting, place a pillow at the small of the back to promote proper posture.

At nighttime, make sure that you sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. Doing so helps keep your back in alignment throughout the night.

If you know you will be standing for extended periods of time, make sure that you wear comfortable shoes with a low heel.

4. Exercise

Exercise may be the last thing on your mind when you are suffering from back pain. However, mild to moderate exercise helps reduce the instance of back pain.

When you exercise, you strengthen your muscles and improve your flexibility. Stronger muscles and a more flexible body minimize the amount of stress on the back. Some exercises that are safe for pregnant women include walking, swimming, and low impact aerobics.
